Mount Vesuvius

Our first day in Rome was actually a side trip to Pompei.  The first main stop on this trip was at Mount Vesuvius for a hike up the volcano.  When we first got there it was cloudy and stormy.  They had closed the trail due to lightning.  Fortunately the storm cleared and we were able to hike to the top.

I imagine on a clear day the view to Naples and the ocean would have been pretty cool.

Did the ground just shake....

...yeah...I'm a dork.

Abbey of Sant'Antimo

Not far from Montalcino is the Imperial Abbey of Sant'Antimo.  The building dates back to around 813.

Rocca di Tintinnano

As we continued our drive around the Montalcino region, we stopped at this castle that was built around 1274
